Why do I need a business plan?
There are several reasons why a business plan is essential in order to develop a successful business, including:

It helps you work your way through the many details that determine the viability of your business concept .

It helps you confirm your commitment to the success of your business.
It is required by lenders prior to their consideration of investing in your business.
A majority of insurance companies require a formal business plan that includes a section on “risk management” before they will underwrite a General Liability policy.

I’m thinking about opening a business in a field in which I have no education or real-life experience. Is this a bad idea?
Probably. People who are educated and/or experienced in their chosen field of business have greater credibility and are more likely to succeed than those who are not. An exception would be a franchise opportunity in which comprehensive training is included.

What funding opportunities are available for a start-up business?
Available funding falls into the following categories:

Debt financing: Requires payback with interest.
Grants: Typically require matching. If you qualify for a grant you will have to acquire and/or spend an equal amount or more.
Private (AKA “Angel”) Investors: These investors generally make investments in an enterprise that has already established profitability or shows potential for large profits. Usually a substantial and quick return on investment (ROI) is expected.
